Flood Recovery - Restoring Water Wells

Cleaning and Disinfecting Wells- Video Report Published
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Floods 2010 have contaminated/ damaged a large number of water wells in KPk in general and in Nowshera & Charsadda in particular.
This video report highlights the Wells Cleaning & Disinfection methods & procedures adopted by IRSP team in field and in head office.
Removal of polluted water and debris from water wells was the first step followed by
Pumping until the water runs clear to rid the well of floodwater.
Depending on the size and depth of the well and extent of contamination, pumping times will vary… it may take thirty minutes, or it could be several hours or days. Turbidity & pH Checks were most common tests performed in field & water samples were sent for microbiological testing to head office water testing laboratory. Chlorination of well was an important step in disinfection of contaminated water. With the help of Geo Test instrument the quantity of water in a well was calculated by using:
Volume of water in the well using the formula: V = ( πD2 /4) * h
• Where
V = volume of water in the well (m3)

D = diameter of the well (m)

h = depth of water (m)

π = 3.142

For every cubic metre (m3) of water in the well add 10 litres of the chlorine solution.
